David Busch Canon EOS Rebel T5i/700D Guide to Digital SLR Photography David Busch Digital Photography Guides David D Busch Books Reviews

  • I bought David Busch's guide book as a companion to my new T2i a few years ago and I was impressed with his in-depth yet easily understandable explanations in that volume. So now I have moved up to the T5i and I knew I was going to require a little more guidance than what the Canon user manual has to offer to help me understand some of the latest features of this camera. I almost opted for the Dummies book but I liked Mr. Busch's style of writing and the comprehensive content of the previous T2 book so I decided to stick with this book.
I feel I made the right choice! This book does a great job of bridging the chasm between the most basic of beginners instruction to a great wealth of tips and pointers that the seasoned amatuer or semi-pro would find helpful.
The content is presented in a logical progression yet information is easily accessible when you need a quick reference.
Chapter six covering movies and live view is worth the price of admission alone. I've been shooting 8mm, Super8, VHS, Digital8, miniDV and others for over 50 years and I found some pointers here that were very helpful even though I probably won't use my T5i for video work anytime soon.
I particularly applaud the author's coverage of additional lenses and other accessories that a T5i owner may want to invest in down the road.
The book itself is of notable quality with heavy stock, clear sharp illustrations and a sturdy binding. Printed in the USA, too!
If you own a Canon T5i or plan to get one soon, do yourself a favor and get a copy of this book!
  • This is the "missing manual." The T5i has a lot of features new to me, including video which was not on my previous DSLR and also a touch screen. And the new "SCN" setting on the mode dial means that you have to drill down to get to the night exposure settings. For that reason, David Busch's guide is almost essential to getting the most out of the T5i. While you can start using the camera almost intuitively, to really get into all the power of the camera, you need a guide that is better than the camera's manual.

The first chapters are "Getting Started" and are the basics. What should you have, at minimum, for your kit of equipment. How to get started taking photos. Then you get to move "outside the box" and move into optimizing your photos. There is a lot of power here, so the chapters on optimization for your particular photography task are helpful.

Some nuggets info on how to charge the battery effectively. How to use the new wireless flash feature. Information about the updated autofocus, different from the T4i and previous versions of the Rebel.

One fun thing Busch suggests you google "Canon T5i Manual PDF" to find a downloadable manual (why this isn't on the CD of software manuals included with the camera escapes me. Canon should include a PDF of ALL manuals.) But you can find it and download it to your PC. He suggests putting it on a thumb drive and keeping it in your camera case to always have a digital copy available. But...he doesn't know THIS trick of mine download the same PDF of the manual and if you use a , send it to your 's email. Your , in case you didn't know, has its own email address, which you can find in your "Manage Your " section on . You enter an "approved" email address (prevents spamming your ) and then send an email from that address with the attached PDF. Presto, it will appear in your DOCs on your . I do this for all manuals of any equipment I take on vacation, because of course the goes with as a tablet. And yes, you can do the same for any tablet, load the PDF onto that device. This book is more expensive than I usually like to spend on books BUT... I will say it is entirely worth it.
  • Very easy reading with wonderful, very clear photos and diagrams. I keep it in my car and take it in with me while I'm at a restaurant. It's a good time for me to read, a nice quiet time to mark important sentences with a highlighter, and add little sticky tabs to pages I want to return to. It covers all the ins and outs of the camera with examples and thoughts on the creative aspects of different choices in the settings. It encompasses it all. You will find some books with few or poor-quality images and charts, but this book has done it the right way. Highly recommend it.
  • David Busch shares not only his knowledge of the T5i, but also his extensive knowledge, and experience in photography. The author goes through all the features of the T5i and presents the material in such a way to not only make it memorable, but gives you ideas in how you can stretch your horizons photographically.
  • This book explains the many features of the T5i much clearer than the manual that came with the camera. I've already taken better, more interesting photos because of it. Highly recommended.
  • This is something that everyone that has a canon T5i should have. It is well written and easy to read and understand. I've been able to go to this book for answers to any question I've had about my camera. GREAT book!!!!
  • I got my copy today and have already read the chapter on autofocus. This book is well printed and with lots of color and perfect for the new owner of the Canon T5i. It is so easy to read and understand, this is my first book by the author but will not be the last. It is well suited for the beginner or the advanced, I can not say a thing bad about it and would recommend it to all, get your copy and be as happy with it as I am. It is one of my best purchases in a long time.
  • When you spend as much as you do on the Canon T5i, it makes no sense to try and read the tiny print in the owners manual that comes with it. This book explains absolutely everything you need to know about your new camera and how to coax the best pictures out of it. And it's all written in non techy language anyone can appreciate. The book itself is big and hefty and loaded with pics and instructions specifically for the T5i.

Bottom line, Get the book and save the magnifying glass for something other than reading the T5i owners manual.
