They were seven brothers raised in sharecropper poverty. They escaped dustbowl sandstorms -- each taking a different path and carving out a separate niche as their family saga unfolded. It is a remarkable story of the legacy of a tender, proud, undaunted beauty, her seven “suns” and their uniquely individual responses to the life and circumstances into which they were born. Theirs is a story of heart-rending tragedy, exceptional resilience, unbridled rebellion and the intrigue that comes with highflying drug smuggling and the money laundering and tax evasion that accompanies such an enterprise. The high drama of a grand jury indictment and an extended Las Vegas trial unveiled the early trauma, which lies at the heart of the story and held the narrator captive for a lifetime.

"My mother is the youngest of the nine children in this book. Reading the stories of my grandmother was so fascinating and enlightening! I couldn’t put the book down. My uncle’s ability to tell a story made me feel like I was right there with them!"

  • I grew up with the Whittenburgs. Ernest was my best friend from the fourth grade thru high school. I was devastated to hear he was involved in drug smuggling. This is factual account of the family told in a straight forward, yet sensitive way. I loved and admired them in spite of my disapproval of their unpredictable behaviour, and language. A true American family tragedy. I would most definitely recommend this book. Thanks Vernon.
  • I LOVED this book! I may be seen as a bit biased, as I am a Whittenburg, but I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It is a heart felt tale full of love, intrigue and tragedy. A Mother whose fierce unconditional love for her children taught most of them to stand by each other no matter the circumstance!! The story is told first hand from one of the nine siblings as they are born into poverty and continues through their unique struggles to make their way in the world. Definitely a page turner!!
  • Someone call some movie producers because this should be made into a cinematic experience! This memoir is written with heart, strength and honesty. The reader easily gets brought into the writer’s life journey. We meet the family of J.V. Whittenburg and “travel” with the author thru many years of his familial relationships. We “see” some of the landscapes of America. We “hear” the sounds of a busy house. We can “touch” the cotton plants. There are times to rejoice, times of suspense and times of deep hurt. You are sure to experience many of these emotions too and when finished want to hear more from the life of J.V. Whittenburg. I know I do!
  • Dr. Whittenburg was a neighbor in New Jerse and is a friend. He was also minister of my church prior to retiring to Florida. All that aside this is a really good read. Lots of diverse stories from the cream separation process in a dairy farm to high steaks drug trafficking south of the border - probably all true. I enjoyed it all - again it's a really good read.
  • Growing up in the Bronx , I have little to no experience of life in other parts of the US. This book transported me to other areas and a era before mine. Descriptions were so vivid, I actually felt I was partnof the family! Very entertaining. Thank you for being so raw and truthful with your memoirs. It adds to the authenticity of your stories.
  • I was born in to the Whittenburg family. My father was Pete. He died young so I didn’t get to know the Whittenburg family. Reading this book brought me great joy and great sadness. It would make a great movie for that period of time and it’s an epic story. Thank you Uncle Vern for sharing it with the world.
  • So, poingantly and beautifully told. Such colorful characters! I was hooked by the first chapter, and couldn't put the book down. It's a compelling story of family and growing up, so true and relatable to anyone with siblings and parents. I highly recommend this book!
